Biography of St. Jerome Emiliani:
Jerome was born in 1481 in Venice as the son of Angelo Emiliani. After having fought in the military and being taken prisoner, he made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Treviso. He dedicated most of his time to the study of theology and visited many sick in the hospitals. As the plague and a famine reached Venice, Jerome took special care for the many orphans. He built many orphanages and founded a religious society called Somasca. Jerome Emiliani died of plague at the age of fifty seven.
