Biography of Charlemagne:
Charlemagne was the Frankish king who conquered most of Europe and the first ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, crowned in 800 by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day. Among his many campaigns were: The Lombard War, the Spanish War, the conquest of Bavaria, the conquest of the Avars, the Byzantine War and a thirty-year effort to subdue the Saxons and convert them to Christianity. Because of his great interest in education, French college students refer to him as a saint and a hero. Charlemagne founded the University of Paris.
Patronage: He is the saint patron of French schools.
