Saint Helmstan is often called Saint Helmut
Feast day: 29 March
When did St. Helmstan live: in the eight century
St. Helmstan was born in the eight century in England and was bishop of Winchester in South-England. During his episcopate, Winchester blossomed into an important center of Christian faith in England. This development coincides with the reign of King Æthelwulf (839-858), who, according to tradition, was a very devout man and lived for some years in Winchester as a monk. It is also said that he donated many of his lands to the church. There is only little information about the life of Helmstan, who apparently died around the year 850.
