When did St. Alfred the Great live: 848 - 899
Biography of St. Alfred the Great:
Alfred was born in 849 as the son of the king of Wessex. At the age of five, Pope Leo IV predicted that Alfred will one day be king of Wessex. In fact, he was crowned king in 871 after the death of his father and his older brother. He successfully turned down attacks by the Vikings and the Normans and improved the financial situation of his country, built schools and founded monasteries and churches. Alfred the Great died in 899 and soon after his death, people started calling him "the Great" and venerating him.
